OVERVIEW

What happens when your project is overshadowed by a major issue that seems unsolvable and may put the entire project at risk?  Using the Apollo 13 blockbuster movie, the speaker will draw analogies from the movie and its characters – the leaders and subject matter experts of the Apollo 13 mission.   A combination of slides and short movie clips will be presented to spark discussion on how a crisis project is dealt with under intense time constraints and technical challenges.  The Apollo 13 team must resolve a crisis that cancelled the original mission and created a new project with one deliverable: Get the Apollo 13 crew home safely!  Characteristics of strong leadership will be discussed, along with managing the interactions of team members in a pressure environment.  This year is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission.  The style of leadership and technical problem solving done by the Apollo 13 team in 1970 is still relevant today for project leaders!

SPEAKER BIO:

Bruce Garrett, PMP

Bruce Garrett is an HP retiree and part time college instructor. During his 40 year career in the technology industry, he worked in various Engineering and Project Management roles for three different corporations. He spent his last 12 years at HP working as a project manager, where he managed Test Software deliverables for new server products. Bruce has volunteered with PMI-Houston chapter, having done several presentations at their chapter meetings and annual conference education sessions. He is active with Toastmasters International, an educational non-profit organization that promotes public speaking and leadership skills.
